14th National Rice Day- Celebrated

The 14th National Rice Day observed with the Slogan “Double Crops Rice Promotion, Enhance Economic Motion" by Nepal Agricultural Research Council in the premises of Agronomy Division, Khumaltar Lalitpur. The formal function was chaired by Dr Yangya Pd. Giri, Director of Crops and Horticulture, NARC. The chief guest of the program was Honorable Member National Planning Commission Dr. Prabhu Singh Budhathoki.  The other Guests at the event were Dr, Jib Raj Pokhrel, Vice Chancellor NAST, Dr. Yubak Dhoj GC Secretary of Ministry of Livestock Development, Mr. Ishowr Pd. Rijal officiating Secretary MOAD, Dr. Budhhi Ratna Khadge, Member Secretary of NAST, Dr. BN Mahato, officiating Executive Director of NARC, STRASA Co-coordinator Dr Uma Shanker Singh, IRRI Nepal Representative Dr. BP Tripathi.

 Similarly, member secretary of National Natural Conservation Trust, , Joint Secretary of MOAD, Directors from NARC, , representative from CIMMYT, ICIMOD, China Aid team, Program Directors from DOA, Former Executive Directors, Directors, Senior Scientists, Scientists and other staff of NARC were also present in the functions. In the event big participation from Scientists, Technicians, Farmer's group and Journalists were observed.

Rice is one of the most important and number one cereal crop and staple food in Nepal. Area under rice crop is 1.553 million hectare with productivity of 3.37 t ha-1.  Formally, the national rice day celebration program was inaugurated by Dr. Budhathoki, by irrigating and uprooting the rice seedling raised in the tray for machine transplanting. The guests highlighted the importance of rice in Nepal and its significance in Nepalese economy. The contribution of rice in national economy and its cultural, social and political importance was highlighted by the speakers during the program. They also emphasized to improve the productivity of rice in the country and to develop climate resilient fine and aromatic rice varieties.

After the plenary program all participants visited the field and rice seedlings were transplanted by Machine received from China Aid Programme and manually by the participants with great fun. Government of Nepal declared Asar 15 National Rice day since 2004.
