Oil seed Research Program

Introduction

National Oilseed Development Program was established in 1976 (2033 BS) for the research and development of the oilseeds in the country. After the inception of Nepal Agricultural Research Council in 1990 (2048 BS) it was renamed as National Oilseed Research Program (ORP). ORP is located at Lalbandi Municipality, ward no. 2, Nawalpur. Its geographical location is 27° 3′ 86″ N latitude and 85° 35′ 52″ E longitude at an elevation of 144 masl. It is situated to the south side of East- West National Highway at 65 kms North-West of Janakpur and 95 kms North-East of Birgunj.

The climate is hot and humid in summer season (390C) and cool in winter (70C). ORP receives an annual rainfall of 1600-1700 mm, with 89% of precipitation occurring during June- September. ORP occupies 33 ha of land of which 26 ha is under cultivation. The soil on station is sandy loam and is slightly acidic to strongly acidic.

Objectives:

  • Collection, Conservation, Characterization, Assessment and Utilization of indigenous and exotic oilseed genetic resources.
  • ORP’s mandate crops are: Rapeseed, Sarson, Mustard, Sesame, Groundnut, Linseed, Niger, Sunflower
  • Periodic Assessment of production problems and potentials of major oilseed crops in different agro-ecological zones of the country with the collaboration of agriculture research stations, extension agencies and defining and prioritizing the research agenda.
  • Development and conduction of applied and adaptive problem solving and potential exploration researches on oilseeds and generate varieties, production package of practices, diseases and insect pest control measures.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with agriculture research stations, disciplinary divisions in planning and conduction of on-station and on-farm experiments for generating location specific technologies.
  • Developments of techniques/technologies that minimize or prevent pre-and post harvest losses and enhance oil quality.
  • Production or breeder and foundation seeds to some extent and provide technological and training support to the oilseeds producers.
  • Establish linkages with national/regional/international oilseed research agencies for exchange of expertise, research materials and collaborative research.
  • Assist NARC in formulating oilseed research and production policy.
  • Publish research findings and recommendations of latest technologies and collaborate with extension agency for wider dissemination.

Activities:

  • Varietal improvement works on winter oilseed crops.
  • Varietal improvement on summer oilseed crops.
  • Enhancing groundnut productivity through optimum use of fertilizers.
  • Participatory technological verifications at outreach sites viz. Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara and Chitwan.
  • Source seed production and distribution of rice, maize, wheat and oilseed crops.
