Dr Govinda Prasad Sharma, Secretary (Agriculture Development) of Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) along with Sabnam Shivakoti and Bishnu Hari Devkota visited National Genebank, Khumaltar at 23 Dec 2021. Genebank Chief Dr Bal Krishna Joshi presented the current status, major achievements and future plan along with genebank’ request. All labs, banks, and fields were visited and discussed for further improvement along with issues and constraints. Following action tracts/ requests were presented and Secretary suggested to proceed for celebrating 2079 as Agrobiodiversity Year and Magh 1 as National agrobiodiversity and Kandamul Day.
- Field genebank, aqua pond genebank and agro-gene sanctuary in all government farms, aqua pond genebank, school field genebank, agro-gene sanctuary in religious places (sad biu chharne), school and college
- District agrobiodiversity profile and district agrobiodiversity index
- Recognition of agrobiodiversity rich farmers (award/ incentive)
- Agroplantation in city areas (agro park), along the road sides and public areas
- Integration of native technologies and AGRs in education system
- Development of web portal for AGRs and native technologies
- Development and promotion of site specific stable crops/ varieties/breeds (food, vegetable, grain legumes, fruits, livestock and fish, etc)
- Guiding documents: Agrobiodiversity conservation and utilization bill, national agrobiodiversity strategy and action plan (NABSAP), ABS for agrobiodiversity including ABS implementation strategy and action plan, PVP&FR
- Back up germplasm in Svalvard Seed Vault
- Inclusion of additional accessions under MLS
